The fact on how the conversion is counted specifically depends on the chosen validity in the configuration of the process:
Validity "Process" A user is counted as converted, when he accesses the subsequent process step within the visit and doesn't start the process again before he finishes it.
Validity "Visit" A user is counted as converted, when he accesses the subsequent process step within the visit.
Validity "Visitor" A user is counted as converted, when he accesses the subsequent process step within the configured time period.
