Goal

To manually assign a Link Category during message creation.

Background Information

Link categories can be assigned manually or automatically. Grouping links is sometimes useful for statistics, activities, or selections. The link category must be created before it is used for these purposes (see Link Categories).

For landing pages, only the automatic assignment of link categories is possible. This is because the message contains an Engage Variable rather than a link. The  Engage Variable in the message is not converted into a link address until the message is processed. To assign a link manually, it must be possible to recognize the link during message creation. To assign the link category automatically, the landing page URL or a word from the URL is designated as a keyword to make the assignment (see Create a New Link Category).

Procedure

  1. Create a new message in the Message > Outbox area.
  2. In the Compose Message window, click the Link Category button. The  Assign Link Categories window opens. In this window, it is possible to give each link a link category.
If your system is set to automatically assign link categories, the assignments are carried out via regular expression (Regex) the first time the window is opened (see Automatic Assignment of Link Categories).
After that, changes to the link categories of the message must be done manually. The assignment via Regex only takes place one time per message.
  3. In the New Category column, define whether links are kept, deleted, or assigned to a new category:
    • Keep: Select Keep Assigned Category to retain the category that appears in the Currently Assigned column. If no category is displayed, the link does not have a category.

    • Delete: Select No category to remove the category that appears in the  Currently Assigned column. A category is no longer assigned to the link.

    • Assign New Category: Select a category from the New Category drop-down list to replace the category that is displayed in the Current Category column.

  4. Click the  OK  button. The selected settings are applied to the links. After the settings are applied, the links are considered manually assigned and can only be manually edited.

Manual assignment of a link category is lost when the message is saved as a draft.

Regex adjustments do not affect them. Only changes to the link category name are applied system-wide.
