Goal​

To create an SMS message.

Prerequisites​

SMS messaging is an extra feature of Mapp Engage.

Set up SMS messaging on your system:

  1. Work with your account manager to register the necessary codes and keywords for SMS messaging. For more information, see ​SMS Code Types​.
  2. Create one or more dedicated groups for SMS sendout. For more information, see ​Create a New Group​.
  3. In the group settings, define the inbound mobile ID, outbound mobile ID, and reply handling. For more information, see ​Define the Inbound Mobile ID​.

Supported formats and limitations​

SMS messages are text-only. The following format limitations apply.

Supported

  • SMS messages can contain special characters. However, you must use a 16-bit encoding.

  • SMS messages can contain links to your website. However, only smartphones recognize a URL and turn it into a clickable link for the recipient.

  • SMS messages can contain personalizations (both placeholders and complex personalizations).

  • SMS messages can contain some Mapp Engage Variables, including coupons.

  • SMS sendouts support selections. Apply a selection during sendout for more targeted messaging.

Limitations

  • SMS messages are text-only. You cannot apply any formatting.

  • SMS messages do not contain a subject line.

  • SMS messages do not support images or attachments.

  • SMS messages have a maximum length that depends on the type of character encoding.

    • SMS messages that are sent with 7-bit encoding are limited to 160 characters per message.

    • SMS messages that are sent with 16-bit encoding are limited to 70 characters per message.
      Only 16-bit encoding allows special characters.

Procedure

  1. In the main navigation​, click ​Create​ New > ​Message​ > SMS Message
  2. Enter message information and click ​Create​.
  3. Compose your SMS message in the input field.
    The current number of characters in the SMS appears beneath the input field.
    You can add personalizations, Mapp Engage Variables, and coupons to the SMS.
    You can shorten a link in an SMS Message by pressing the ​Shorten Links​ button. For more information, see ​Add Links to SMS​
    The ​SMS Message​ area shows you the number of SMS messages that are required for sendout.

  4. Expand the ​Advanced Options​ area. In the ​SMS Encoding​ area, specify the encoding Mapp Engage uses for the message and click ​Prepare Sendout​.
  5. Create the desired sendout settings and click ​Check Message​.Step 4. Summary ​opens.
