Mapp Engage saves comprehensive statistical information and provides this information for evaluation in real-time. Saved data includes data that is captured directly in Mapp Engage and data that the recipient generates.

Over the course of message sendout, several factors affect the actual number of messages contacts receive.

  • Immediately after the message sendout starts, the system ensures that some messages are not even processed due to limitations or selection criteria for some addressees. After initiating the sendout, the addressees for whom messages are not processed are determined. These addressees are skipped due to limitations or selection criteria.

  • Next, messages are skipped based on further processing that looks for additional exclusion criteria. For example, system-wide disabled addresses. The internal system processing is completed once the Mapp Engage internal MTA delivers the message to the external MTA of the recipient.

  • Finally, the external MTA that services the email program of your recipient can reject messages for various reasons. Mapp Engage registers these messages as bounces after the completion of the sendout.

Basic Information

Several factors influence the number of messages that reach the inbox of a recipient:

  • Settings

  • Skips

  • Bounces

  • Feedback

Settings

Settings are reductions of addressees which are determined before the message is sent.

  • Selection: Target specific addresses in the Mapp Engage database that match predefined criteria. A selection can be used in several ways:

    • Limit a message sendout to selected recipients.

    • Limit the application of time- and event-based activities.

    • Define which recipients can get specific content.

  • Number of Recipients:  In Mapp Engage, you can define whether a message is sent to all recipients, a percentage of recipients, or a fixed number of recipients.

Skips

Skipped Messages are messages that are sorted out before sendout for various reasons. For example, an address that is deactivated system-wide or lacks required contact information. These messages are skipped before they reach the internal Mail Transfer Agent (MTA) of your Mapp Engage system.

The reasons  Invalid Domain and  Sendout Failed are an exception. Messages that are not sent for these reasons are first excluded from sendout in the internal MTA.

Some reasons for skipping messages differ for single and group messages. Single messages are sent only to individual recipients, the group-specific reasons for group messages do not apply. Instead, factors that are related to the individual recipient are considered.

For more information, see  Skipped Messages (tab).

Bounces

Bounces are messages that the MTA of the recipient rejects. Bounce responses are generated after sendout, but before the message arrives in the inbox. There are different types of bounces.

Type

Description

Soft Bounce

Delivery failures that temporary problems cause.

  • Transient:  Delivery failures that problems such as a full inbox or lack of disk space cause.

  • Blocked:  Delivery failures that result when the sender address appears on a list of unwanted email senders. The ISP or the recipient can set a blocked sender list.

  • Unknown:  Delivery failures where the exact reason for the bounce cannot be determined.

Hard Bounce

Delivery failures that permanent problems cause.

  • Rejected:  Delivery failures that result when the email address does not exist or the account is deactivated. The receiving MTA cannot resolve the address before the domain and refuses the email.

Feedback

The recipient of a message or the email program that receives the message create this kind of response. Feedback responses do not reduce the number of recipients.

  • Spam Complaint:  A spam complaint is generated when a recipient classifies the message as spam in their email client.

  • Out-of-Office Message:  The email application of the recipient generates this kind of reply message automatically.
