These criteria create segments that are based on whether they have received, opened, clicked, or forwarded a message, or whether a message has produced a conversion, deactivation or unsubscribe.

You can create segment conditions based on a prepared message. The segment includes all sendouts of the prepared message. This includes group and single sendouts. It also includes all future sendouts of the prepared message. There is no need to send the prepared message before using it in a segment.

You cannot use this type of selection in CMS message paragraphs or for profile-based automations.

Email Activity Criteria

Received

Selects contacts who received or did not receive a selected message. If the contact was a part of the sendout group and the sendout did not produce a response, the system assumes that a message was received.

 Configuration
SettingDescription
Received
  • Yes: The contact received the message. The system assumes that a contact received the message as long as no skip or response is recorded for the message.

  • No: The contact did not receive the message for one of the following reasons:

    • The system did not send the message to the contact. For example, the contact was not a member of the sendout group, was not a part of the sendout segment, or was skipped during sendout.

    • The sendout produced a response and could not be delivered (for example, the inbox was full)

Additional Criteria

  • None: Skips the segment of a specific group or message.

  • Group: Defines whether the segment criteria refers to a Specific Group.

  • Message: Defines whether the segment criteria refers to a Specific Message.

  • Message Category: Defines whether the segment criteria refers to a specific Message Category.

  • Sent: Defines a message that has already been sent in your system.

Opened

Selects contacts who opened or did not open a selected message.

 Configuration

The system records an open when the email tracking pixel was displayed or the contact clicked a link in the email. All other contacts are assumed not to have received the message. When you open the segment panel, you see the same fields as in the Received section described in the preceding section.

Sometimes, a contact opens an email, but the system cannot track the open. If both of the following are true, the system is unable to track an open:

  • The contact has opted to suppress the display of images in the email inbox.

  • The contact does not click any trackable link in the email.

Bounced

Selects contacts to whom an email message produced a bounce response. Bounces are messages that the system sends out, but that the receiving Mail Transfer Agent (MTA) rejects. The receiving Mail Transfer Agent forwards a notification to the system that a message was refused. Bounced messages never arrive in the inbox of the contact. For more information, see  Responses .

You cannot select all contacts who did not produce a bounce response. You can only select contacts who did produce a bounce response.
